¹³ Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk ¹⁴ and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”

¹⁵ “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.^(A) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring^(B) out my soul to the Lord. ¹⁶ Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”^(C)

⁹ Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they^(A) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”

¹⁰ So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated^(B) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. ¹¹ The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.^(C)

Death of Eli

¹² That same day a Benjamite^(D) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust^(E) on his head.

¹⁴ Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal^(A) and there renew the kingship.^(B)” ¹⁵ So all the people went to Gilgal^(C) and made Saul king^(D) in the presence of the Lord. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration.
